The 12 Principles Of Design Explained: Complete Guide + Uses

variety in design principles

They are broad guidelines to help you make decisions about how to proceed with your design. Design principles are more abstract and should be considered first when making decisions about design. For example, contrast is a design principle that can be applied to any element in your website’s design. The use of color in design is one of the most psychologically important parts of a design and has a huge influence on user experience. Color psychology and theory heavily influences some of the other principles mentioned earlier. The most important element should lead to the next most important and so on.

Introduction: What Are the Principles of Design?

Luckily for us, in the late 1970s, an influential designer named Dieter Rams saw this problem. In response, he asked himself what constituted good design and came up with his own list of ten principles. But if you’ve ever seen an unintelligible parking sign or a website from the early days of the web, you’ll know there’s definitely such a thing as bad design. You can’t just flip a switch and create beautiful designs on a whim. Like learning to walk before you run, there are certain fundamentals you’ve got to learn first. In the chart at the top, aligning the bars in the graph to the left makes it easy to digest the data.

Balanced designs tend to appear calm, stable and natural, while imbalanced designs make us feel uneasy. Hierarchy shows the difference in importance of the elements in a design. Colour and size are the most common ways we can create hierarchy — for instance, by highlighting a primary button, or using larger fonts for headings.

Use this powerful principle of design to bring consistency and a holistic feel to the content you create. White space works well in corporate communication and aesthetic designs created for special occasions. The lesser the matter, the more premium a piece of content is perceived to be. One can also use negative spaces innovatively to say more while saying nothing. White space is also called negative space, as it isn’t always white.

Negative/White Space

Complementary colours create the most colour contrast and therefore variety in the a painting. To create balance, vary saturated colours and muted colours too. The white space is a part of the background, so if the background contains a pattern, this is also considered white space.

That is why there’s a rise in the number of platforms that offer stock illustrations for people to use. TO illustrate the variety principle in UI design let’s take a look at the Medium homepage. Medium uses variety in its layout to create a categorization between the type of articles as shown in the image below.

Repetition is a main principle of design without which you wouldn’t be able to achieve unity and consistency. You repeat elements like colors, shapes, lines, forms, and fonts to make the design familiar and easy to grasp. Contrast is a highly important principle of design that participates in applying almost all other principles.

And if you consider the rest secondary, they’ll all help you ace your next design project. A shape is any closed area on a flat surface that encloses an area and has a boundary formed by straight lines (circles are closed areas). The color palette that you choose for your interiors will have a direct impact on how good your room looks. Therefore, it is important that you choose the right colors for yourself so that the overall look is harmonious and pleasing to the eye.

Negative Space

Proportion refers to the relative size and scale of elements in the design. It's essential for making things look three-dimensional and also adds direction and hierarchy. Movement can be harnessed to distract, direct, and pull the viewer’s gaze around a design. It distinguishes your company from the millions of others out there, so when folks see your designs they immediately know it’s your business. Where symmetrical designs can be quite static and predictable, asymmetrical balance can give designs a more dynamic feel.

We can imagine a centre point of the design and distribute the elements in a way that creates balance. Negative space (also known as white space) is the empty area around a (positive) shape. The relation between the shape and the space is called figure/ground, where the shape is the figure and the area around the shape is the ground.

The principle of balance in design is tightly related and easily determined by the viewer’s perception of how much visual weight each element holds. When you draw an invisible line in the middle of the design, both sides should “weigh” the same. That’s why one of the best ways to see if a composition works is to view it from a distance. One of the common ways artists do this is by using contrasting colors close to one another.

You can stay true to this principle of design by using similar colors, shapes, textures, and elements that appear consistently throughout your communication. The principle of design used to govern the usage of white spaces comes into play with minimalist designs in a significant way. It can create balance, improve the standard or level of design, and reduce clutter.

Simply put, the most important elements in your design should take up the most space — though there are a few other, more subtle ways to establish hierarchy. This infographic shows how alignment can help the reader understand information. As an example, when you look at a painting or drawing, you can see how the artist used lines to create depth and perspective in his work. The number one rule of design is variety — you want to give people options so they can find something they like or will use.

This principle helps convey the main message, evoke emotions, or guide user behavior. Unity and variety are two essential principles of graphic design that can help you create visually appealing and effective compositions. Unity creates a sense of harmony and cohesion among your elements, while variety adds interest and contrast by introducing different elements. To balance unity and variety in your design, you can use methods such as contrast or dominance to highlight similarities or differences among your elements. By using unityand variety appropriately and proportionally, you can create designs that are both coherentand captivating.

The Importance and Usefulness Principle — principle states that people will be more attracted to things that are important and useful to them. In other words, if a product or service doesn’t provide enough value for its users, they won’t use it. Grid and alignment are closely related to balance and refer to the way elements are arranged in relation to an invisible grid on the page.

Nearly half of the building, located at the corner of Harwood Street and Woodall Rodgers Freeway, has been pre-leased to Charlotte financial institution Bank of America. Still, according to Eggen, who was previously the managing director of Qualcomm Ventures North America, it’s not all rainbows and unicorns in CVC land. The environment for CVCs, Eggen says, is actually kind of mixed right now—some CVCs are dialing back investments, while others are doubling down. By World War II, spiritualism no longer attracted the acolytes it once had, and White House séances became a curious footnote in history.

No one knows what exactly occurred between Pierce and the Fox sisters. But the White House session may have mirrored the Fox sisters’ other séances, which commenced with guests sitting in a circle, holding one another’s hands, and reciting a prayer. Then, the rappings would begin, and the sisters would allegedly lift the veil on the spirit world.

He deplored spiritualism, séances, and mediums, all of which underwent a revival in the wake of World War I and the influenza pandemic. He was on a quest to expose mediums and psychics as the charlatans he believed them to be. Reflecting Americans’ belief in spirits unseen, some of the country’s first families held séances at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. They nursed their grief with the help of mediums, demonstrating that séances aren’t only about the deceased; they’re also about the living. Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and Lincoln biographer David Herbert Donald used surviving documents to calculate that the first lady may have held eight séances in the White House. The boy’s death devastated both his parents, but Mary Todd Lincoln’s grief was especially debilitating. She stayed in bed for weeks and couldn’t bear to attend his funeral. But even when she rejoined society, Lincoln longed for a reunion with her deceased son.

This is the web version of Term Sheet, a daily newsletter on the biggest deals and dealmakers in venture capital and private equity. “CVC can be the ultimate platform, but it has to be done right,” Eggen says. The big mistake that many CVCs make is to be overly dependent on their corporate parents.

The Fox sisters’ allegations electrified Americans eager to connect with deceased loved ones—individuals such as Jane Pierce. Fascinated by their narrative, she invited them to Washington. On January 6, 1853, newly elected president Franklin Pierce and his wife Jane experienced every parent’s worst nightmare. Their only surviving child, 11-year-old Bennie, died in a horrific train accident in Massachusetts.

To make solid venture investments, a CVC needs to be able to think and act independently of the more entrenched ideas that a parent company might have. And though returning capital is important, it’s not the only thing that matters—large companies also expect strategic gains, whether that’s new technology or a new product geared towards the company’s customers. “More than 70 new CVC units started in 2023, and the number of corporate venture capital organizations grew 10x over the last decade,” said Sneha Shah, EVP and head of new business ventures at SEI, via email. Some reports estimate that there are as many as 2,000 CVCs, up from several hundred in 2021. Corporate venture capital, or CVC, is a bridge between the public and private markets.

By American calculations though, she was only 99. But it mattered little, for Wu was always the star attraction as she drifted from table to table, huddled with the chefs or grabbed the phone and took takeout orders.

relational database design

This attribute of the relationship, how many other entities an entity can have a relationship with, is known as the cardinality of the relationship. SQLite is, therefore, best used as a database component for other applications. Notable uses include popular browsers, such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, and Safari. PostgreSQL is a free relational database manager available under an open-source license.

Disadvantages of the Relational Model

Most relational databases offer easy export and import options, making backup and restore trivial. These exports can happen even while the database is running, making restore on failure easy. Modern, cloud-based relational databases can do continuous mirroring, making the loss of data on restore measured in seconds or less. Most cloud-managed services allow you to create Read Replicas, like in IBM Cloud® Databases for PostgreSQL. These Read Replicas enable you to store a read-only copy of your data in a cloud data center. Replicas can be promoted to Read/Write instances for disaster recovery as well.

Each bit of information (each attribute) is in its own column, and the database assigns a unique ID (a key) to each row. Properly designed databases are not only easy to maintain but also improve data consistency and cost-effectiveness in terms of disk storage space. The role of a database designer is to determine how the data elements interact and what information needs to be stored. Relational databases are transactional—they guarantee the state of the entire system is consistent at any moment.

Advantages of Single Table Inheritance:

I would not feel comfortable using this book to teach introductory students. Although the chapter titles suggest modularity, I didn't feel there was a great deal of discipline in terms of where content was placed. For example, chapter 8 (The Entity Relationship Data Model) appears to be essentially the same as chapter 10 (ER Modeling). I think students being introduced to the concepts here would be very confused by this.

This separation means that database administrators can manage physical data storage without affecting access to that data as a logical structure. For example, renaming a database file does not rename the tables stored within it. Diving into database design, I’ve realized there are various types of data models. Essentially, data models define how the logical structure of a database is modeled. They’re fundamental to understanding how information is stored, processed and accessed. Database Design, a collection of processes for designing, developing, implementing and maintaining enterprise data management systems, is critical to effective data management.

Advantages of the composite key:

SQL is also extremely powerful, allowing you to add and change data on the fly, as well as alter the structure of database schemas and tables without impacting existing data. If you were to scale a relational database horizontally across multiple machines, it becomes difficult to ensure consistency since clients may write data to one node but not the others. There would likely be a delay between the initial write and the time when the other nodes are updated to reflect the changes, resulting in inconsistencies between them.

The tables are represented as cylinders and the relationships between them are represented as arrows. The Master Site is the original source of the data, where the tables are stored and updated. The Materialized View Site is the destination of the data, where the materialized view is created and refreshed. The relational model’s wide use across multiple industries led to it becoming recognized as the standard model for data management. Even with the rise of various NoSQL databases in more recent years, relational databases remain the dominant tools for storing and organizing data. The relational database was first defined in June 1970 by Edgar Codd, of IBM's San Jose Research Laboratory.[2] Codd's view of what qualifies as an RDBMS is summarized in Codd's 12 rules.

This makes it lightweight and able to work with a wide array of systems and platforms. It had greate experience to learn database design from this trusted platform. It will update the REFERENCING ATTRIBUTE in REFERENCING RELATION if the attribute value used by REFERENCING ATTRIBUTE is updated in REFERENCED RELATION.

SQL also makes it easy to retrieve datasets from multiple tables and perform simple transformations such as filtering and aggregation. The use of indices within relational databases also allows them to locate this information quickly without searching each row in the selected table. A primary field is a major component of ensuring data integrity, as it uniquely identifies each record within a table and is used to establish different types of relationships between tables. And in Airtable, the primary field is always the first column in any table (and it can't be deleted, moved, or hidden). The image shows two groups of tables, Group A and Group B, that are related to each other by some foreign keys.

Many relational databases use SQL (Structured Query Language) to perform queries and maintain data. Edgar F Codd proposed the relational database model where he stated rules. For any database to be the perfect one, it has to follow the rules.

In the “Agents” table, we might make a new field—“Agent full name”—that concatenates the values of the “Agent given name” and “Agent surname” fields. After refining your lists, it’s a good idea to review them with the team members you interviewed to confirm that you’ve accounted for every necessary type of data. The next steps are to extract a list of entities and a list of attributes from the research you’ve compiled. Data integrity refers to the accuracy, completeness, and consistency of the data in your database.

The logical model focuses on the data requirements and the information that will be stored – independent of any physical considerations. It doesn’t concern itself with how or where the data will be physically stored. This is how we define the relations between the data in a 1-to-N relationship in a relational database.

At least in the .pdf version, some of the images are a bit difficult to read, although almost all can be read if you zoom in. For the most part, the visuals are clear and clean, and the book's formatting is consistent. The text also has an issue that almost any general explanation of SQL has, which is that SQL implementations vary so much that it's hard to make general statements about the language.

For example, the primary key of the OrderDetails table comprising orderID and productID. If unitPrice is dependent only on productID, it shall not be kept in the OrderDetails table (but in the Products table). On the other hand, if the unitPrice is dependent on the product as well as the particular order, then it shall be kept in the OrderDetails table. The primary key is also used to reference other tables (to be elaborated later). The book covers the material required in database design well and will be relevant in future.

Ideal for managing structured data (data that can fit neatly into an existing data model), SQL is an essential tool for developers and system administrators in a wide variety of contexts. Also, because of its maturity and prevalence, candidates with SQL experience are highly sought after for jobs across a number of industries. The many-to-many relationship is, in fact, implemented as two one-to-many relationships, with the introduction of the junction table.

We bring you various living room corner sofa designs to guide you to make a better choice. Before that, let us know a bit about corner sofas and why they are becoming the current favourites.

Focus on the Fireplace

My aim was to ignite a spark of creativity in you, showing that with a little ingenuity, even the smallest corners can become your favorite nooks. Together, we’ve journeyed through a realm of possibilities, proving that every corner holds the potential to reflect our personalities and enhance our living spaces. Thank you for joining me in reimagining our living rooms as canvases for our creativity and personal touch.

A dash of green in any space automatically lifts the energy and vibe of a room. Be it a leafy one or a flowering pot, they are always noticed by your guests. If you want to maximise the potential of your living room, then place a large-leaf plant in a solid coloured pot. Place it on the floor or on a stand, either way greenery is a fail safe way to fill empty corners. Living room shelving is a great way to add extra storage space to an underused or bland living room corner. We love how this floating desk doubles as a reading with a bookcase above, and the design doesn’t take up any unnecessary floorspace while still providing plenty of room to work.

Open Living Room Layout Ideas

Lucky for you, we've loads of gorgeous spaces to prove that your corners can become things of beauty. From a cozy home for your houseplants to a place to WFH, a little library and a boozy bar cart for cocktail hour, let these living room layout ideas inspire you to make the most of your space... Corner sofas come in many styles, shapes and sizes – and we want to help you find the corner sofa of your dreams. It’s about picking the right design, the right size and the right expression for you and your contemporary living space.

living room corner ideas to make the most of an empty space

Contrary to common belief, pushing all your pieces against the walls is not the best way to arrange furniture in a small living room. This creates an awkward space in the middle and highlights the room's cramped dimensions. Instead, pull furniture toward the center to create a more open feeling. The options for how to place furniture in a living room are nearly endless. The best way to position your sofa, chairs, accent tables, and more generally depends on the shape of your room and what it's used for. The most important thing to do when it comes to living room organization is to look at everything you own – art, books and objects – and work out what living room storage you need.

The corner sofa is great for watching TV in the living room while resting your feet on the corner edge. Decorating an empty corner in my living room allows me to unleash my creativity and infuse personality into the space. One idea I’ve explored is creating a gallery wall with framed artwork or photographs, which adds visual interest and serves as a conversation starter. Another creative approach is to install floating shelves to display decorative objects or books, adding depth and dimension to the corner. Additionally, I’ve found that hanging a statement piece like a large mirror or tapestry can instantly elevate the corner and make it feel more dynamic and cohesive with the rest of the room decor.

Not only does an elegant bureau look ultra-chic, it's also a great spot to use as a makeshift small home office idea if you don't have space for an dedicated workspace. If you haven't been blessed with a home office, you might have spent the majority of last year trying to 'carve-out' a WFH space in your existing rooms. The corner of a living room can lend itself to be a little workstation for when the soft office (a.k.a your bed or the sofa) just won't do any longer. A larger houseplant is going to have more of an impact, but quick hack, you can add loads of height to your houseplant but popping them on a stand, a stool or even a small table.

The living room corner can sometimes feel like an awkward space where nothing really goes and nothing really fits. Living room corners can be the perfect spot for extra seating, a home bar, or even a workspace. Shelves and storage aren't the only interior fixtures that are modular. These are wholly interchangeable, so you can reconfigure them without any faff. Using the connectors you can adapt it again and again, quickly and easily, so you are ready for any occasion.

Open shelving can create a real statement – and is both useful and beautiful. It is also a more economical option than a fully enclosed storage unit, especially in a compact room. It is particularly suited to small recesses in areas such as either side of a chimney-breast or corner space, helping to visually enhance and correct uneven proportions. Whether we are working from home or the kids need to do their schoolwork, these days there’s always a need for a dedicated workspace. It needn’t be imposing, so it’s a good idea to make the most of an unused living room corner or alcove.

'Make the most of a bland and empty living room corners by displaying a unique art sculpture (or two!). Sculptures are one of the best living room corner ideas and can simply fill an empty space or make a statement,' explains Quinn. No matter how big or small your living room is, open shelving is an en vogue way to update your living room corner ideas. Bonus points for this living room which has an arch to add an additional focal point to display vases, books and more. For extra storage, cabinetry has been installed in a flush and fuss-free way. For artwork lovers, you could have a sculpture on a plinth, which will take up minimal floor space,' says Joanne Quinn, lead designer, LuxDeco.

And if your living room is really large you can use all four corners with a variety of seating options to make it the major design element of the room. When it comes to home decor every inch of space needs to be embellished for a complete look. These tiny spaces in your living room can be filled with furniture, pieces of artwork, shelves and can make all the difference in those corners of your living room. Keep reading for some new and stylish corner decorating ideas to glam up your living room. The right living room corner ideas will ensure that no space in your home is wasted. By utilizing extra corner space, you can do anything from introducing simple decorative objects like plants to creating an entire bespoke seating area.

A single sofa chair or a side table brings in that extra oomph to your living room. More seating in the corners of your living room makes this space feel cozy. Create a special place where you can curl up with your favorite author or a steaming cup of hot tea.

Living room lighting ideas, whether they're floor, ceiling or wall lights, don't have to sit in the centre of your room. In this living room corner idea, the chandelier has been installed in the latter third of the room and directly above the beige-colored sofa with its gorgeous hexagonal motif. Living room corner ideas can either be a blessing or a curse – depending on how you approach them. Too small to fit in any substantial furniture but too big to leave empty – these parts of your living room do need a bit of extra love to make them stand out. A classic for more than a decade, Weego home is an alternative to the stark and minimalist designers that often dominate the L.A. Full of comfort, bright color and graphic patterns, the offerings are laid-back luxe, while still feeling modern and fresh.

Her agent reached out to Dylan Howard, editor of The National Enquirer, and editorial chiefs at other publications, seeking about $200,000 to tell her story of having sex with Mr. Trump a decade before when he was at a golf tournament in Lake Tahoe, Nev. Karen McDougal, a former Playboy model who said she had an affair with Mr. Trump, received $150,000 from American Media Inc., The Enquirer’s parent company. When Mr. Pecker voiced concerns about the potentially unlawful implications of the deal, Mr. Cohen had a warning.

But that strategy, which led to a tense exchange in the Lower Manhattan courtroom, did not seem to pay off. Mr. Pecker repeatedly rejected characterizations and questions posed by the lawyer, Emil Bove, and resisted the suggestion that he had not been forthright in earlier testimony. The New York Supreme Court building, a trial-level court, often serves as a symbol of the court complex. It featured prominently in the television show “Law and Order" and the 1957 courtroom film classic “12 Angry Men,” to cite just two examples. For decades, few people had access to Donald J. Trump like Rhona Graff. Now, Ms. Graff, his former personal assistant at the Trump Organization, became the second person to testify against Mr. Trump in his criminal trial in Lower Manhattan.

Philip and William drag Morgan into the kitchen while Rebecca flees to her bedroom. Saul steals a burning branch from the fireplace and sets fire to a curtain before Roger awakes. They fight and fall off a landing; Saul is killed and Roger injured. Morgan breaks out of the kitchen and returns to the main room. He frees Margaret and Gladys from the closet before taking Saul's body upstairs.

Next week may offer more drama, if fewer days.

William goes to help Rebecca close a window, leaving Margaret alone. Morgan, now drunk, attacks her and chases her up the stairs to Philip, who is coming down with the lamp. Philip throws the lamp at Morgan, knocking him down the stairs.

In the US, the film was originally released by Sony Pictures on an anamorphic 1.85 aspect ratio DVD, with the only extra being the original theatrical trailer. It was later paired on disc with Mr. Sardonicus and included in two separate William Castle box sets. The original disc was later reissued as a DVD-R burn-on demand release from Sony Pictures Choice Collection.

Prosecutors accused Mr. Trump of sending a message to Mr. Pecker and other witnesses to be “nice,” or get attacked. They said they would submit the additional violations to the court. As Mr. Conroy laid out what he said were violations, Mr. Trump whispered to his lawyer Todd Blanche and frowned. Joshua Steinglass, a prosecutor for Alvin L. Bragg, the Manhattan district attorney, said in court last week that after the recording emerged, Mr. Trump was desperate to “lock down the Stormy Daniels story” and prevent more damage. They agreed that Michael Cohen, Mr. Trump’s personal lawyer and fixer, would have to handle the problem.

“The boss is going to be very angry at you,” Mr. Cohen told Mr. Pecker, he testified Thursday. Mr. Pecker said on Tuesday he had agreed to be the “eyes and ears” of the Trump campaign and used AMI to deal with threats to Mr. Trump’s reputation. Mr. Trump, 77, is charged with falsifying business records to cover up his reimbursement of Mr. Cohen. He has denied the sexual encounters and pleaded not guilty to the charges he faces. The Enquirer’s parent company paid $150,000 to Ms. McDougal, a Playboy model. Mr. Pecker urged Mr. Cohen to handle paying $130,000 to Ms. Daniels, who was shopping her account of the sexual encounter with Mr. Trump, which she said took place in 2006.

Prosecutors say Trump keeps breaking gag order, with four new violations.

Mr. Farro spent an hour on the stand being questioned by prosecutors before the trial was adjourned for the day, ending the first week of testimony in the Lower Manhattan courtroom. The payment to Ms. Daniels was made through a limited-liability company called Essential Consultants, which Mr. Cohen set up through First Republic. Mr. Farro said that Mr. Cohen called him while he was golfing on his day off and said he needed to create an L.L.C. for a real estate consulting company right away. Their questions over three days sought to establish that he and his publication suppressed negative stories about Mr. Trump while both promoting him in The Enquirer and attacking his Republican primary rivals. Mr. Cohen set up the account in October 2016 and funded it from his home equity line of credit at First Republic.

Mr. Pecker said that he and The Enquirer sought to help Mr. Trump’s campaign through catch-and-kill deals to suppress negative news about him and through positive headlines that promoted him. She also told prosecutors that she saw Ms. Daniels at Trump Tower. A lawyer for Mr. Trump later suggested that her visit could have been connected to an appearance on “The Apprentice,” his reality show.

The film has also been released on DVD in Spain, retitled La vieja casa oscura, both separately and as part of a William Castle box set. Each of the relatives is required to return to the dilapidated mansion before midnight each evening or forfeit his share of the family fortune. First Agatha Femm, Casper's mother, is discovered with her knitting needles stuck in her neck. Casper's twin brother, Jasper, is the next victim, followed by Roderick, the head of the family.

Give Kitchens Character

beach interior design

Coastal styles cherish the character of unique modern beach house décor while Hampton’s interiors favor dark and polished finishes like walnut and rosewood flooring. Coastal design is an aesthetic that can easily be elevated to fit any home style, space, or room size. Coastal decor often includes a color palette of soft blues and sandy shades, beachy textures, and materials like rattan or driftwood. However, coastal decor doesn’t have to consist of cliches like bottles of seashells.

Oceanic Art

Los Angeles designer Patrick Ediger works to create spaces that enhance all aspects of his clients' lives. His firm approaches each project holistically, taking the home’s site, architecture, and the clients’ needs into account. Sustainability is a top priority for the designer, who sources locally and sustainably when possible. His values-driven approach, environmental consciousness, and relaxed, refined style have garnered him a devoted clientele of creatives and celebs such as Christiana Aguilera, Cheryl Tiegs, and Phil Jackson.

Trade Mark Interiors

Wispy white curtains that move with a soothing breeze is certainly a pretty sight. Increase your sensory experience (see natural fiber above) with the sound of the wind catching the tule window dressing. If you do want to give painting your dining chairs a go, have a read through our guide to how to paint furniture to get you started.

Mexican haçienda style mixes with elegant Balinese touches for an unique, inviting look. Warm orange and yellow hues paint the walls, while vaulted wood ceilings elevate the sense of airiness provided by stunning panoramic windows. Step outside to the sun-drenched terrace and stretch out on the pillowy daybeds with your favorite magazine. When you imagine driving along the PCH and the dream homes you see along the way, you probably picture a place like Corral Canyon Beach.

Best Coastal interior design Ideas for Your Home

Not only can slipcovers be washed easily but you can also get creative with your choice of fabric. Lighter will make the room feel spacious while a pop of color can uplift the look. All homes with a coastal interior design style have visual characteristics in common.

Another way to lean into the coastal vibes without going with a literal blue theme is to play with textural elements. "Introducing a woven texture in an accent furniture piece or a wall covering while keeping the larger pieces more neutral can quickly bring about a seaside feel." While blues are a natural choice for coastal-inspired décor, also consider a palette of cool sea green—which almost has a retro feel to it—and pristine white. Earthy accents, like the bamboo light fixture and fresh flowers seen in this design by Creative Tonic, can warm up the space. "I love to go all out—especially at a beach house—and lean into the seashells, swimsuit artwork, wallpaper that brings to mind waves, and so on," says Courtnay Tartt Elias of Creative Tonic Design.

Bring elegant coastal decor to your bathroom

For a project in the Marina District of San Francisco, Jute filled the space with natural materials, including wood floors and table and chairs, linen seat cushions, and alpaca ombre curtains from Rosemary Hallgarten. It’s no wonder we want to bottle up that captivating allure and let it pour throughout our homes in the form of coastal décor. Whether you live within earshot of rolling waves or not, there are countless ways you can infuse this aesthetic into your space. And the best part is that you can turn up the dial as much or as little as you want while putting your own spin on the style. Modern beach houses are designed to maximize the enjoyment of coastal living. They often prioritize functionality and magnificent ocean views, creating an ideal setting for entertaining and escaping the hustle of everyday life.

beach interior design

Encourage Abstract Art

Sometimes light and pastel shades of blue can be underwhelming, and you crave darker and bold colors. If you feel overused dark blue by accident, you can pair it with classical décors like rattan chairs and woven jute décor in the neutral backdrop of a coastal dining room. The safest way to convert a space to a modem coastal style is to use tiles that are a little glossy and have a cool color scheme overall.

Plus, neutral kitchen favorites such as taupe, magnolia and chocolate for a sophisticated take on beach house decorating. Prioritize natural fabrics such as linen and cotton—incorporate natural materials on furniture and accessories such as weathered wood furniture, a jute rug, or a rattan mirror. Maximize natural light by keeping window treatments minimal, like clean solar shades or gauzy curtains, and don’t clutter the room with too much decor to maintain an easy, breezy feel.

Beach house décor has been having its moment in the spotlight over the past few years – and for good reason. This New England coastal style strikes the perfect balance between sophisticated and rustic; like an escape to the countryside without leaving the city limits. Blond and white woods with a texture like driftwood still give coastal homes its beautifully balanced appeal. The rougher elements like wood, shell and rope complement soft textiles and wispy sheer or tule curtains. For example, chunky rope or delicate netting can double as curtain tiebacks in a coastal living room, and a part of an old boat like the wheel can make an incredible statement feature in a spacious entryway.

Creating a cohesive and harmonious coastal interior design is possible if you stick to a few chosen colors. For a beautifully beachy interior design home, your primary tones will lean toward the neutral spectrum of white, grey and beige. Highlight hues can be bright but add them with discretion without going overboard. Neutrals form the basis of Hamptons and coastal style homes, but the difference comes in the accent and highlights colors. Coastal interior design highlights the lively and laidback aspects of a sophisticated beachy resort.

Carnival Cruise Reviews 2024 UPDATED: Ratings of Carnival Cruise Line

However, selecting the right solutions takes preparation and research. This guide outlines five areas of consideration to help you find the right fit. A place to post any severe weather that may effect cruising. A place for everyone to introduce themselves.

Cruising

The poblano and corn soup was a lukewarm and thin, like chicken broth thickened with potato flakes and has four carrot slivers on top - no peppers, potatoes, corn, or flavor. Mushroom soup pretty much the same, very watered down. By the beginning of day three, instead of hunger as lunch and dinner times approached, I feel my stomach just clench and a feeling of dread. Only the second cruise ever where I was ready to go home days before the end of the cruise. My cruises have been about 50% Royal Caribbean and 30% Carnival, with about four each on Princess, Celebrity, and MSC. We have also cruised on Norwegian three times but will no longer book with them.

Carnival Freedom Roll Calls

I am just making an observation and trying to come up with an explanation why some people would consider the guests on Venezia "rude". @pe4all @kona_wahine Regarding the clientele of the ship, I don't think it's fair to simply say "New Yorkers are rude". A big factor is that people that live in big cities (NY or Miami) tend to be louder and are used to smaller personal space. I had a friend in college who came from a different country. He was told "back off, you perv" when all he did was standing maybe a foot away from the middle aged lady in front of him at a supermarket checkout line.

He eventually left to drive his shuttle and a woman came over to get 1 woman to go on a shuttle. We all followed and were told it was only for the 1 woman. That happened a few times and about 90 minutes of waiting my group of 2 were put on a huge shuttle by ourselves and taken to JFK.

There have been cutbacks on all five lines, but none come even close to what Carnival has done. This ships design is perfect for northern cruises, as we all know she was designed for another line and has been “adapted” to CCL. They have a strong amount of experience sailing out of NYC and also sailing out of there year round. Overall, I am sure they are pleased with cabins sales, but it comes down to revenue optimization. I wouldn’t suggest this ship for anyone who loves spending most of their time on the lido deck because it is small and incredibly stuffy and hot when the roof is closed.

I have spoken at length about the disgusting food I ate on my last Carnival cruise. It was so bad I knew people would accuse me of hyperbole. I am sorry that you realized it was the truth too late.

Even though NY is our homeport, we have waited on booking Venezia due to some of the problems Mieng mentioned. We were hoping they would straighten out the embarkation/debarkation issues by now. As far as Kona_wahine's comment on NYers tending to be rude - not all of us are - lol! We have had the same issues with some Miami cruises. As far as smoke on CCL ships go - I entirely agree. Wish they would make the casino non-smoking, as the smell does tend to build up and drift to other parts of the ship.

Carnival Ships and Roll Calls

Even after meeting with the maitre de on day 1 and getting on a list, we never got moved. First time in almost 30 cruises that we never got our request. Table mates were very nice, but just the principle . Just to be clear, I am not making any judgment.

I posted my review and it’s waiting for the censor to approve, but I thought to provide a few more practical tips to folks on the boards here. Search for or add a roll call for any sailing on the Sunshine. I thought the ship was beautiful and the food was pretty good.

Obviously that lady preferred to have more personal space and felt that he was encroaching to the point of being offensive. Sept embarkation was a smooth process - long, but smooth. There were 8 of us (not traveling together, just 8 random passengers) who all had pre-paid for JFK shuttle. It was pouring down 🌧 no shuttle to be found and nobody to help. The driver for the LGA shuttle was trying to help and eventually learned no shuttle was ordered so "they" were working on it.

The key lime pie in the buffet had not a drop of lime juice, was just sweetened condensed milk. The bass with Charleston grits was served in four small bites placed evenly over the grits, but that was fine because it was too hard and dried out to eat anyway. Even the tall cakes had more fluffy, flavorless icing made of vegetable shortening than actual cake.

Tell everyone about your experience at your ships home port. Give advice on where to park and what to expect during check in. From the outside looking in it doesn’t look like Carnival had any trouble filling Venezia for the upcoming winter cruises but I understand if that’s not the case. Almost an all-out brawl watching NFL game on the big screen - Eagles vs. San Francisco - crazy fans going at it.

They were also correct about the horrible design of the Liquid Lounge, and of the smoke. We are booked on the Venezia in January 2025 but will be canceling it as soon as we get home. Thank you to all of you who have posted here for confirming our concerns. I enjoyed Venezia despite a few of its flaws. I planned on writing a review but the holidays are taking all my time at the moment. I’ll be sailing her again in February and I hope it’s at least an equally enjoyable experience.

I didn’t mind the cold days because we still had a full cruise worth of hot days. I personally wouldn’t take a 7 day from NY in the winter but I’ll gladly take these longer itineraries. It’s too bad Carnival decided not to do winter in NY again. We are platinum and had early seating - requested a table for 2 - and wound up at a table for 8, which turned into 6.

We have embarked on CCL ships, walked through the empty casino and the smell of smoke could knock you off your feet. They definitely need to work on their filtration systems. We cruised end of October and had pretty much same experience. People on  this cruise were very nice OR extremely rude.
